The Story of the
Hampton Roads Alumnae Chapter
In 2003, a few women from Hampton Roads began meeting in the hopes of forming an alumnae chapter in the then Iota B Province. In 2006, a group of recent graduates from the Theta Pi Chapter at Christopher Newport University began work on their own alumnae chapter. Province Officer Stephanie Ransome put the two groups in contact, and they joined forces. The new group of women began meeting and completing requirements for installation in the Fall of 2006. The members of the group sold musical patterned scarves both locally and at the National Convention, hosted an anniversary reception for Theta Pi at Christopher Newport University as a service project, and had an official petition signed advocating their installation.
On June 16, 2007 at Grace United Methodist Church in Newport News, VA, 15 women were affiliated into the ΣΑΙ Alumnae Association. Anna Ratliff, National Vice President of Extension & Fraternity Development, and Stephanie Ransome, Province Officer, officially installed the Hampton Roads Alumnae Chapter. The new chapter quickly grew, affiliating 9 additional sisters and 1 patroness member within the first year. Additionally, the recent founding of HRAC inspired two neighboring universities to found their own collegiate chapters of ΣΑΙ, to whom the Hampton Roads Alumnae chapter provided help and guidance.
In 2011, ΣΑΙ National Headquarters determined that the Iota B Province had grown too large with the addition of 3 new chapters in the Hampton Roads area, so the National Executive Board approved the formation of a new province; thus, Iota D was born. HRAC founding member, Kymberley Jeffries, was appointed the first Province Officer for Iota D, which now encompasses the Coastal Virginia cities of Norfolk, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Isle of Wight, Newport News, Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
In 2022, ΣΑΙ National Headquarters decided to to recombine the Iota D and Iota B providence back into the Iota B providence during our national convention.
